Pumpkin spice cold brew is back at the grocery store, and you know what that means, fall is here!
In this post, I am sharing casual fall outfit ideas that are perfect for traveling, running errands, casual get-togethers and movie dates. My hope is that you will be able to easily re-create these looks using pieces you already have in your wardrobe, but if you see a style you are in love with, I have also linked similar second-hand finds.
Casual Fall Outfit Ideas:
Layer with a workout romper or jumpsuit

One of my biggest tips for creating outfits you truly love is to build looks with your most worn pieces. Don’t be afraid to re-wear your favorite pieces because those pieces become staples in your personal style and act as the foundation of your best looks.
You could easily style the looks above with a pair of biker shorts, but I’m styling a black workout romper that I’ve been non-stop this summer and cannot wait to transition into the fall season.
I can also already tell that I am going to be styling ball caps in a ton of casual looks. In this post, I am styling my Florence hat from when I studied abroad. I did not link any hats because I love the idea of styling a hat you have a personal connection with in your looks.
Start with a graphic tee
I’ve recently realized that to build a relationship with the pieces in your wardrobe, you need to wear them over and over again. I used to think I wasn’t a graphic tee girly, but this Harley Davidson tee has been another one of my go-tos lately. I tend to be a women’s size small/medium in everyday clothes, and I am wearing a men’s XL in the Harley Davidson t-shirt.
Or a crewneck
The purse in the two images below was gifted, but NOT in exchange for this post.
This Wilson sweatshirt is one of my favorite purchases of 2023. I know there are fashion rules against buying something simply because of the logo, but in this case, I purchased this sweatshirt because I love this branding design they recently did, not because of any “status” that may come with wearing a Wilson sweatshirt. However, any crewneck with a pair of oversized jeans, sneakers and a ball cap would make a great casual fall outfit.
Throw on a cardigan
This outfit was probably my most worn fall outfit last year, and I know I will be outfit repeating this one this year. For me, these button-down cardigans are a closet staple that I find myself throwing on all the time.
You may not have a duster cardigan in your wardrobe, but I wanted to include this one in this post because I owned it for around one year before I really started styling it. At first, my only idea for how to style a duster cardigan like this one was to pair it with black leather pants and a black turtleneck. Now, I wouldn’t even style it that way. I experimented with this piece a lot last year, and you will see it in several of my posts this year.
In the first look, I am styling it with a black tube top and flare yoga pants for travel. This look would also be really cute with a black athleisure jumpsuit. In the second look, I am styling it with a pair of green cargo pants, a white tee and sneakers. This is a very simple and common way I styled it for working at a coffee shop in the fall.
Style Spanx for 2023
Does anyone else still have faux leather Spanx leggings from 2017 in their closet?? Back in the day, I used to style them with Uggs, sweaters and chunky dad sneakers weekly in college. Now, one of the ways I would style them is with these lug sole boots (that I actually have the hardest time styling), an oversized sweater and my leather jacket.
Another way I would style Spanx faux leather leggings for 2023 is with an oversized tee, a bomber jacket and a baseball cap, I love how sporty this look is. I would also swap out the bomber jacket for an oversized hoodie.

The third way I have styled Spanx faux leather leggings currently is with this boxy quilted green jacket. Pro tip: Style oversized tops with these leggings to balance it out and make the look feel more current.
Pull out last year’s shacket
The purse in the first and third images below was gifted, but NOT in exchange for this post.
I know most of us probably bought into the shacket trend at some point. I made the mistake of purchasing these shackets without thinking about how they would work in my closet. And because of that, I haven’t worn them a ton.
This year, I want to make an effort to style these pieces more because I don’t dislike them, I just have an issue with seeing them in one specific box and not pushing them out of that box (which is one of my top tips for making a piece work with your personal style).
The above looks are two ways I am planning on styling shackets casually this year. I am incorporating pieces I wear frequently, which makes the looks feel more me. Plus, there is just something I love about the element baseball caps are adding to these looks.
Or the Downtown Field jacket from years before
Who else owned the famous J.Crew Downtown Field jacket back in 2017?? After years of saying, “I wish mine still fit me,” I finally took a moment to search the jacket on Poshmark and found several listings for only $12! You may think this jacket is cheugy, but I think it’s a fall classic that, when styled correctly, looks chic and timeless.
Pick out a go-to sweater
The purse in the below images was gifted, but NOT in exchange for this post.
I thrifted this navy blue sweater last winter, and it is probably my favorite piece in my wardrobe. Over the summer, I styled it draped over my shoulders with so many different looks, and I know it will continue to be a staple piece this fall.
My biggest tip for shopping for sweaters second-hand is to purchase a de-piller. If you’ve ever seen little balls build up on a sweater- that doesn’t mean that the sweater is ruined forever. With a de-piller, you can easily remove these pills, making the sweater look brand new.
Build a monochromatic look
The cargo pants in the below images were gifted, but NOT in exchange for this post.
Another way that I have loved styling this navy sweater in the colder months is with a monochromatic look. Cargo pants are also a closet staple of mine, so this casual fall outfit is right up my alley.
