Every year when the holiday season rolls around, I find myself in a panic about what I’m going to wear. This panic often leads to last-minute impulse buys to try to put together an outfit, despite the fact that I already have so many things that will work in my wardrobe. Today I’m going to be going through some of the Thanksgiving outfits I already have in my closet. Hopefully, this will inspire you to style pieces you already own this Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving Outfit Ideas 2023:
Jeans and a classic sweater or jacket:
This first look would be perfect for a more casual Thanksgiving setting, especially if it’s one where you end up spending more time outside. If you haven’t seen my other recent posts, you might not know that I recently re-purchased the J. Crew downtown field jacket from like 2017. I still have the one that I had back in the day, it’s just too small for me now. You’ll never believe it, but I found this one on Poshmark for only $12! I remember always loving this jacket so much, and it’s a really good fall classic.
A cute sweater and jeans:
The sweater in the first image above was gifted years ago, but NOT for this post.
This first outfit is still pretty casual, but the color of this sweater feels just a little more festive. If you want to lean into the fall colors, and you already have a sweater in your wardrobe that works, that’s a super easy look to go for.
I wore the second outfit to my boyfriend’s family’s Thanksgiving last year. This sweater is from Free People in like 2017, and it’s one of my favorite pieces in the fall and winter. I love the color blocking and the colors that they chose. So again, just a fun sweater and a pair of jeans.
Leather, lace and knits:
The boots in the above images were gifted years ago, but NOT for this post.
This first look is what I wore to Thanksgiving at my dad’s last year. This is just a duster cardigan that I have pinned at the top with some safety pins, then added a sheer lace top from Free People underneath. I had never styled this cardigan this way, but I saw a cardigan online that had eye hooks in the middle to keep it closed around the chest, and I wanted a cardigan like that. Then I realized I could just pin this one that I already own, and it ended up working out perfectly.
The second look above is what I wore to my mom’s Thanksgiving last year. A midi dress in a fall color is a perfect option, and I love that this one is leather. To me, the best Thanksgiving outfits consist of fall colors and patterns, and textures, such as suede, leather, lace, ruffles, satin and knits, so by pairing this dress with the lace underlay, it created the perfect combination. You could also do leather pants, a leather mini dress, a leather skirt or something of that variety. I might re-wear this again this year to my dad’s Thanksgiving dinner.
A fall pattern:
The boots in the third image above were gifted years ago, but NOT for this post.
This first fall print look features a top that I got at Rue 21 in 2015. I’m not kidding – it’s been in my wardrobe forever. It’s getting a little tight in the arms, but I love this style paired with these thrifted suede pants and these silver heels. I always forget about this top when Thanksgiving rolls around, and it’s definitely a great piece for the occasion.
The second look features a comfy pair of printed pants that I have dressed up with my silver heels. I think this can be a really chic look while still comfortable. Statement pants of any kind, such as plaid, printed or a bold fall color, can be a great start to building your Thanksgiving outfit.
This last skirt I have worn for Thanksgiving for multiple years. I actually wore this exact combination in 2021. The skirt is from a Coachella collection by H&M circa 2016 that I continue to hold on to because it’s the perfect fall print. This top is one of my favorites from Vestique, a boutique in the South. I think that anything with ruffles is also great for Thanksgiving.
Leather shorts and blouse:
If you live in a warmer climate but still want that fall vibe, you could do a pair of leather shorts. I’ve chosen brown because that feels more Thanksgiving to me, and then I’ve also done little suede booties and a suede bag to continue to bring in those fall materials. I’ve had this outfit for years, and it is one of my favorites, especially during the transition from summer to fall.
A maxi dress:
Continuing with the white ruffles, don’t be afraid to wear your white maxi dresses after Labor Day, especially if they have long sleeves. This maxi dress is great for all seasons and can be styled year-round. I found this on Poshmark, and it’s also by Free People. I got it for like $50, and it’s one of my favorite pieces that I have in my closet. I’ll definitely consider wearing this for Thanksgiving this year, my only concern is accidentally spilling something on it.
A chic sweater and satin pants:
The boots in the above images were gifted years ago, but NOT for this post.
This look may feel a little less fall in the colors, but I think the materials of the knit, satin and leather are what make it fall and festive. This is just a bit of a chicer option if you don’t want to embrace the full theme of Thanksgiving.
